Just a reminder that this place continues to be closed (3 years now 11/18 to 12/21 as of writing this). Drive Shack - who owns the lease - is not in a hurry to develop this place and has shifted its business strategy to high-end mini golf venues in the Southeastern US. From the company's 3Q21 earnings call, they only mentioned "having a lease" in Manhattan and did not offer a projection as to when the facility would be open. They did note that it takes about 18-24 months to build out a driving range, so I wouldn't expect anything until 2024 at the earliest. It's a shame given the huge surge in popularity in golf that has happened during COVID. Drive Shack should opt out of the lease so that someone who actually cares to develop the land can move in. Randall's Island should do better due diligence next time and find someone more committed to opening this place back up. July 2024 update: Randall’s Park Alliance has said Drive Shack has dropped all plans to develop this property. What a shame.
It’s pretty messed up that this gem of an outdoor golf and batting cage venue has been sitting unused for so many years. Even when the astroturf was looking beat up, my friends and I had a great time. There used to be a little tiki type bar where you could have beers and casual snacks too. I agree with the other reviewer, more due diligence should have been done. There should be a clause that charges a penalty for days out of service, which is pretty typical for commercial leasing when the landlords actually care about being part of the community. I work for the City and DCAS…. Dudes… this is embarrassing.
Giving 1 star because it has been closed for so many years. This was a great resource for the community and at the very least, they should reopen the driving range. This would never happen on the main island of Manhattan or in a more affluent neighborhood.
